One of the most common questions I get from clients before their session is: "What should we wear?"
And I get it! Choosing outfits for photos can feel weirdly stressful. You want to look good, feel confident, and match your family's vibe without overthinking every detail. The good news? I’ve got you. This guide will help you feel calm, confident, and photo ready with some tried-and-true styling tips to make sure your images reflect the real, beautiful you.
Start with What Feels Like You
Your session is all about capturing you; the way you connect, laugh, love, and exist in your world. So first things first: you should feel like yourself in whatever you wear. If you’re uncomfortable in an outfit, it’s going to show. I want you to be able to move, dance, snuggle, and have fun, so stick to pieces that you feel great in!
Color Palette: Stick to Neutrals & Earth Tones
My editing style is true to color with a moody edge — rich, warm, and deeply honest. To complement that vibe, I recommend leaning into:
Neutrals (cream, tan, beige, soft gray, white)
Earth tones (rust, olive, mustard, mauve, terracotta)
Muted tones (dusty blue, sage green, soft rose)
These colors photograph beautifully in natural light and let the emotions and connection shine without distraction.
✨ Bonus Tips:
Avoid neons, bright reds, or overly saturated colors. These can cast weird tones on skin and clash with nature-based backdrops.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in jeans and white tees. Instead, aim for coordinated outfits that mix textures, tones, and layers. Think cozy knits, flowy dresses, linen shirts, or denim paired with soft cotton. Choose 2–3 main colors and mix in complementary shades. Add in different textures to bring visual interest.
Don’t forget shoes — they matter more than you think!
Shoes might feel like a last-minute detail, but they can make or break the vibe of your session. Dirty sneakers, worn-out sandals, or neon athletic shoes can pull focus and clash with an otherwise beautifully styled look. Stick to neutral-toned boots, flats, sandals, or classic sneakers in good condition. Think intentional and clean. They’ll tie your outfit together and keep the focus where it belongs: on you.
If you’re not sure what to wear on your feet, go barefoot! Bare feet photograph beautifully in nature, add a grounded, carefree feel, and eliminate the stress of trying to find the “perfect” shoe.
Outfit Tips by Session Type
Family Sessions:
Let the kids be comfy; think cotton jumpers, soft knits, or dresses they can twirl in. Build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around that with complementary tones.
Couples & Engagements:
Dress for connection. A long flowy dress can add beautiful motion. Layers like jackets or shawls add variety. Jeans and boots work great for the guys too, especially for more casual or rustic sessions.
Seniors:
Bring 2–3 outfits, one casual, one dressed up, and one that feels very you (band tee, hobby-related outfit, sports uniform, etc.). This gives us variety and lets your personality shine.
Comfort Is Key
We’ll be moving around; walking or running through fields, dancing, spinning, cuddling, maybe even climbing or sitting on the ground. Wear shoes you can walk in and clothes that move with you.
And remember, we’ll be laughing, running, snuggling, and maybe even picking wildflowers. So think flowy over stiff, soft over structured, real over perfect.
