One of the best things about being a photographer in Coles County is how many incredible, underrated places we have right here in our backyard. Whether you’re planning a family session, senior portraits, or a golden-hour couples shoot, these locations offer the kind of texture, light, and feeling that make photos come alive.
Here are five of my favorite spots — where I’ve captured some of the most meaningful stories of my career.
Whiteside Garden — A Hidden Dreamland
Whiteside Garden feels like stepping into a fairytale. With winding paths, little hidden bridges, and flowers blooming everywhere you turn, it’s one of the most magical spots I’ve ever photographed. There’s a golden field that absolutely glows at sunset, peaceful ponds that reflect the softest light, and dreamy corners where we can get lost (in the best way). Whether we’re walking hand in hand through the blooms or tucked into a quiet spot under the trees, this place brings all the enchantment and emotion. It’s soft, wild, and full of wonder — a true hidden gem for capturing something unforgettable.
Lake Charleston — A Little Bit of Everything
Lake Charleston is one of those locations that just has it all. Whether we’re skipping rocks down by the spillway, dancing barefoot through the open grassy areas, or sneaking a quiet moment on the dock, this place brings so much variety and emotion to every session. There’s a big red barn that adds the perfect pop of rustic charm, lush tree-lined paths that feel like a secret forest, and golden pockets of light that peek through at just the right moments. We’ll play in the water, wander wherever the light takes us, and capture it all — from the joy to the stillness. It’s wild, peaceful, and full of stories just waiting to unfold.
Downtown Charleston — Urban Texture Meets Small-Town Charm
If you’re into vintage vibes, brick alleyways, and a more editorial feel, Downtown Charleston is a gem. It’s got that worn-in charm that works beautifully with bold outfits, moody lighting, and a little bit of edge. We’ll explore the quiet corners, stroll past the old buildings, and maybe even stop for coffee at Jackson Avenue Coffee in between shots. Whether we’re leaning into the shadows or chasing pockets of light between the structures, this spot gives you something a little different — real, raw, and effortlessly cool.
The Golden Field — My Favorite Kind of Magic
This place doesn't technically have a name — it’s just a quiet little field tucked beside a Dollar General, but when the sun starts to set, it turns into pure gold. The way the light pours in across the tall grass, wrapping everything in a warm, glowing haze…it’s unreal. This is where we run barefoot, spin in circles, and soak in every last drop of golden hour. It’s unpolished, wild, and full of emotion — the kind of place that makes your photos feel like they belong in a movie. It gives all the feels, every single time.
Airtight Bridge — Moody and Magical
Airtight Bridge has a storybook kind of beauty — especially in the fall, when the leaves turn to fire and everything feels just a little more nostalgic. The historic bridge adds a slightly moody, textured backdrop that’s perfect for couples, seniors, and anyone craving something a little off the beaten path. Just nearby, there’s a wide open field that catches the golden light just right as the sun sets, giving us space to roam, twirl, and take in the fresh air. It’s peaceful, cinematic, and full of quiet magic.
